Before and After: Ambitious Kitchen Living Room Makeover
There are some blog posts I just cannot WAIT to write, and this is one of them. I mentioned last week that we were filming with the most amazing production company ever out of New York for a potential TV show. They arrived on a Monday, we became good friends over dinner that night and then had cameras in our face the next few days. We filmed finding the pieces in alleys and our favorite resale shops, the transformation of them in our workshop as well and the before and after of the living room. I have to admit, while it was absolutely crazy to do the whole thing in 3 days, it was exhilarating and so fun. Those of you who know Joe (my husband), knows that his lifelong dream has come true. He loves the camera and it loves him. We will see if the TV network agrees.
Well, for the video, we did a full living room makeover for the inspiring Monique of Ambitious Kitchen. In three days, we completely transformed this room! It was hectic, but such a drastic makeover is super satisfying.
This is the room before we went to work. She had loads of rugs and other random items. It needed a facelift.
When I was meeting with Monique, she said she wanted it to be bohemian with texture and color, while also light and airy. We decided that because it was a light filled room and had really high ceiling that we could go with a bold ceiling. The picture rail made the perfect frame for a pop of color. We chose Benjamin Moore Green Newburg Green and I hope you agree that it is amazing!
Other than the bold ceiling, we wanted the fireplace wall to be where you first looked when you walked in. To make it stand out, we decided to paint the brick white, making it look more cohesive. Because it was such a big built in around the fireplace, we decided to keep the mantle wood as 1. it is beautiful and 2. it breaks up the white nicely.
The next feature that makes me giddy in vintage buildings is a picture rail. We decided to showcase it by hanging this seriously awesome macrame art by Brass & Birch. We bought the rail hooks from Rejuvenation. We think it goes perfectly above the vintage credenza and lamps we found at a resale shop in Andersonville. We refinished the piece in Farrow and Ball Off Black and shined up the hardware. Did I say how much I love vintage? And can I get a high five from all you other black thumbs out there for this super real looking fiddle leaf tree! Yay for 8 feet tall!
These chairs were, believe it or not, alley finds. Yes, they did look pretty bad, we will not lie, but re-stuffed and covered in blush antique velvet gave them a new life! What some people consider trash, we can turn into treasure. Here’s to another life for these chairs that otherwise would have made their way to a land fill.
As you can tell, Milly the cat is happy with the new addition.
And a few more photos by the awesome Aimee Mendez. The Chicago painting above the couch is by one of my favorite up and coming artists in Chicago. Check her out on Instagram as KatherineCorden. You will be inspired!
So that is a wrap…for now?
