“Joe needs a TV show”
I hear this literally five times a week by complete strangers, as well as those who know him best. Joe has an uncanny ability to make people laugh and enjoy themselves. It is usually at his own expense and that does not bother him in the least. He is confident in who he is and uses that to his advantage. Me, on the other hand. I bring the stability to the table. He makes me laugh and I keep him on task.
We have not sought it out, but it is hilarious how many forwarded emails I get from friends with production companies looking for talent. We at times reach out to them, but usually we don’t. However, there was this one time, like three years ago, where I accepted a conference call from a production company. Most of the time when you talk to production companies, it is a slimy feeling and I immediately am like heck no. That was not the case when I talked to Pat and Dan from Frank production. We immediately loved each other and were both hoping that HGTV would approve them to come out here from NYC to produce a sizzle reel.
Our expectations of a gloriously fun and packed two days were met when they came out to film. Man, did we have fun together. Even though our moms and friends think we deserve a TV show, HGTV said “not now.” So no.
Were our dreams destroyed wit the “no.” Not at all. Were we sad, surely. But our hope is not in a TV show but in things that are so much greater. Do I think that one day we will either have our own channel or TV show, I do. But as for now, I love our life, I love our employees (family) and I love that we are building something that encourages people to follow their dreams, no matter how big or small.
Here is the sizzle reel we did with Frank Productions. Please, try to use “lumbar for days” in a conversation today. It will make me giggle.
