MAKING THINGS LIGHTER ON THIS DARK HALLOWEEN WEEK!

With the nights getting longer, the days getting shorter, and Halloween literally in a few days, there is a lot of darkness going around – and, although I’m here for it, you know the cozy nights in and everything kind of settling down a bit earlier, I think it’s time to bring some lightness back into our decor! But y’all to go light doesn’t mean to go white, or pastel, we can go light while still keeping things fallesque. Today, we’re giving you some tips to add some light into your home, and contrasting the ever so natural darkness that’s upon us! (cue Halloween noise here)

LIGHTS

The best way to bring some lightness into the space, is literally by adding some lights! Okay, maybe that sounds a bit sarcastic, but it’s really true! Adding soft lights such as lamps, or candles during this time of year, brings the perfect amount of lightness to the space. While still keeping things cozy and soft, adding some extra lighting around will just automatically brighten the space, without overdoing it. Whether you’re getting a tabletop lamp to freshen up your side table, or going in with a floor-length lamp, next to a mirror to reflect some light, adding actual lighting sources is a great start.

NEUTRAL TONES

Neutral tones give a very light and airy feel without even necessarily adding bright colors. Other than the usual ivory, or beige, neutral tones like tans, browns, greens, dusty reds, mauves, and grays, will all bring a very light feeling to the space. If you have a darker couch, try swapping some of your usual textiles like pillows and blankets, and add a neutral-toned pillow or throw. If the space is feeling really dark, maybe swapping out the area rug for something with a gray or tan color can work!

NATURAL TEXTURES

I’ll say it again, the texture is everything y’all! When wanting to go lighter, before you think color, think texture! Lighter textures and materials will instantly lift any heaviness out of the space, and make things automatically seem lighter. When thinking texture, think of being natural. Think cotton, burlap, chiffon, linen, silk, georgette… there’s a bunch of lighter materials that you can incorporate into the room! Typically woven materials and even leather make things feel heavy! If you have a lot of heavier materials in the space, definitely try offsetting them with these!

WINDOW TREATMENTS

Since the days are getting shorter, and our natural light supply is limited, start to bring an illusion of lightness to the windows – even though we may not be getting that kick of natural light. If you have dark, opaque window treatments such as curtains, darkening treatments or even blinds, try swapping them out for a roman shade, or some sheer curtains! If there’s an already somewhat heavy and dark look to the things surrounding our windows, when the night hits – it’s going to look even darker and actually make the room seem smaller and more cramped! Having light treatments surrounding the window, will bring an illusion of lightness, and may trick your mind into thinking that light is coming through the window, even when it’s not!
