Q&A – What kind of paint do you use?

I get asked questions all the time. Whether they are customers or people interested in starting a business, they come flying in on a daily basis. I am starting a Q&A series on Fridays to hopefully help as much as I can. If you have any questions that you would like addressed, please let us know! We rely on those that have gone before us to give us advice and answer our questions and we are here to pass it on!

As for this week, let’s start with the number one asked question.

What kind of paint do you use? The generic answer.

We get asked this question by people wanting to paint furniture themselves, as well as just consumers who are interested in options. As for consumers interested in options, the basic answer is we use a pre-catalyzed polyurethane that comes in sheens all the way from super flat to piano gloss. It is among the most durable paints that are available and can be tinted into whatever color is desired! It can be used on all surfaces and adheres beautifully! The world is your oyster when it comes to the desired color and sheen!

What kind of paint do you use? The detailed answer.

MegMade was started out of our living room during commercial breaks of Law and Order between when we put our oldest son to bed and when we gave him his dream feed. We would pull the tarp out and plop a piece on and work on them together…every night! At that point, because we were doing it out of our home, we used a green, brush-paint called Amy Howard. It was perfect for us at that time. We would clean the dresser, then scuff it and then paint it and wax it.

As time went on and we grew, we looked into different products that we could spray. We have tried many different brands. We have tried Mohawk, Duralaq, M.L. Campbell and Ilva the most.

Through trying every product, we have landed on what works best for us, our employees and the equipment that we have.

We use a marine stripper on the pieces to get the original finish off. It is super potent, but the green versions of this just don’t work fast enough. We try as hard as we can to go green, but if the product won’t work ,we go with convenience. We then use bondo to fill in all dings and cracks because it dries super fast and is waterproof. As for primer, our guys prefer to use Mohawk for their black primer and M.L Campbell for white primer. They like the M.L. Campbell one better, but they do not make it in black, so there’s that.

As for paint, we are huge fans of Ilva. It is definitely on the very pricey side, but it is worth it for us because it gives a buttery finish and comes in sheens from 0-100 (0 being super flat and 100 being like a grand piano/mirror).

As for other products that we use. We use Mohawk glaze to achieve the cerused look. We use Mohawk stains and dyes. We use Amy Howard chalk paint and wax still if that finish is requested.

If I missed anything, please let me know as we are happy to be a resource. We have tried it all!

I know this is more of a technical Q&A, but I will be answering questions about business, life, design among others as well! Stay tuned and help a girl out and give me some questions you want answered!
