UNDRESSING A DRESSER : THE MEGMADE WAY
Redoing furniture and bringing it back to life is something that brings us so much joy. There’s nothing better than transforming a piece, however, no matter how amazing these pieces look after their transformation, sometimes we get a piece that is completely used and a mess before it becomes amazing! In order to make these pieces a success, we’re telling you the first few steps that you have to do to undress the dresser! Today, we’re showing you how to prep and prepare your furniture for a makeover, stripping it of its previous identity and giving it a brand new one!
CLEAN IT OUT
It may go without saying, but the first thing you have to do is clean this baby out. When you purchase furniture from secondhand stores, craigslist, Facebook, or anywhere you get your hands on some vintage pieces – you need to clean it out as much as you can. Believe it or not, we get so many dressers with old socks still in them, linens, pictures – a lot of left-behind materials. But just doing a quick look over the drawers isn’t enough. Fully removing each drawer and looking behind it, is just as important or even more. You never want to sell a dresser to someone after it’s been redone, to find somebody’s belongings behind the drawers!
REMOVE ANY LININGS
It’s important to remove the older linings that are in the dresser. Sometimes the linings are glued down, and stuck to the bottom of the drawer – if that’s the case, it still needs to be removed. These pieces are meant to feel new after their makeover, and nothing takes away the new feeling like having an old liner.
VACUUM THE INSIDE
The next step is definitely to go in with a vacuum and vacuum up any dust or residue that may be left behind. Sometimes there’s even spider eggs or cobwebs stuck on these pieces, so to ensure the piece is cleaned and ready to be painted, we need to get rid of all of these elements.
REMOVE THE HARDWARE
After the dresser is mostly clean, it’s time to remove the hardware. This part is always interesting because more times than not, there’s a piece of hardware missing and we either have to decide to do away with the hardware all together or try to hunt down it’s matching piece. We love to try to maintain as many original pieces that we can for the piece, so looking for a piece of hardware becomes a fun project we have to take on. If we can’t find the piece, or it seems we have two great pieces of the hardware handy, we will try to have two pieces match, and then go in with a different type to complement it. The best way to ensure you do not lose any hardware pieces is to keep all the hardware into a plastic ziplock bag, and keeping it in one of the drawers!
