CHOOSING HARDWOOD

I bet we can all agree that nothing is more charming than having a beautiful hardwood floor in your home! Hardwood brings a sense of charm, elegance and grace to your home, while still giving you a rustic and finished look. But just like rugs, it all depends on the look you’re going for and what you envision for your space, and there’s a bunch of options to choose from! Hardwood definitely gives a consistent look throughout your home, making it a great option for people who like a clean, finished, and cohesive look. And on the plus side, you can always dress it up or dress it down, depending on the style of decor you add into the space! Hardwood floors are easy to maintain, there are a ton of styles to choose from, and is super valuable when it comes to selling your home – people love hardwood floors!  The best part about hardwood is that it’s all custom! From board width, to color, texture, and even the hardness level of the wood, you can choose it all when it comes to hardwood – making it completely unique to your home.

OAK

Oak is definitely the most popular wood choice for hardwood floors. Oak is extremely resistant to wear, and always achieves a very timeless look. Oak is a great option because it comes in many different shades, and they require little to no maintenance. Oak flooring is also extremely strong, and are not going to be breaking, loosening or splitting.

MAPLE

Maple is also a very popular choice for hardwood floors. Maple is extremely durable, and works in either high or low-traffic spaces. These floors have a subtle grain pattern to them, so it’s a good option for any type of style of decor. However, if you’re looking for an unfinished wood to install and then stain afterwards, Maple floors are not so porous, so it’s not that easy to take in a stain color. If choosing Maple, I would definitely recommend going with a pre-finished wood!

CHERRY

Cherry floors are a stunning option for hardwood floors. Given that red undertone, although you may have to work around some decor elements, cherry would is sure to give your home a very traditional and timeless feel. Cherry wood gives your home a very warm aesthetic, while providing you with one of the hardest woods! It is very hard to scuff, and very resistant to scratches and dents, making it a perfect option for high traffic areas.

BAMBOO

Although not technically hardwood, and actually considered a grass that is highly processed, I’m throwing this in here because a lot of people are using bamboo floors! Bamboo is a very inexpensive option when it comes to having a wooden floor. Bamboo is created by pressing together strands of grass and secured with heat and glues to form a board. It gives a very light and natural vibe to the room, but can be carbonized for a darker look!

FINISHED OR UNFINISHED?

Although finished hardwood can be an easier option for installation, unfinished gives you the opportunity to make it uniquely yours! A pre-finished hardwood floor is a great option, as it calls for a simpler installation process, it’s way quicker to install, and eliminates any strong smells or dust, that comes with staining. On the other hand, an unfinished hardwood floor is also a great option, because you can customize the colors, and clean up any imperfections that may have occurred during installation!

BOARD WIDTH & TEXTURE

Believe it or not, when choosing hardwood, the size of the board can make a huge difference! The more traditional look of hardwood is the thinner strips of wood, that give a very open, and well, traditional feel. The wider strips or planks, give a home a more rustic and modern feel, but definitely still can open up the space. More times than not, you will see thinner hardwood strips, and wider vinyl planks in a home. However, both are definitely options for real wood. There’s also Parquet floors, which are different designs for the installment of the wood! You may have seen herringbone hardwood floor, and that would lie under the Parquet style. You would normally see this in a more formal space.

Another amazing thing about hardwood is that it comes in different textures! You can get a matte texture or shiny texture, both of which can really help customize your floors. A shiny texture gives a more elegant, and classic look. A matte texture gives a more rustic and natural look. Like I mentioned earlier, it all depends on the style you’re going for, and what you feel will best suit you, your family and your home!

IT’S ALL CUSTOM

All in all, hardwood is a really great option for anyone who is looking for a customized, durable and sustainable floor! You can dress it up with some nice area rugs, or you can leave hardwood in it’s natural element, allowing it to enhance the space! There are so many great options to choose from when picking a hardwood, and because of the vast color choices, there is definitely an option for everyone!
