DIY Tripod Lamp
I have loved the look of a tripod lamp for a long time. Look at some of these beautiful ones, especially the top right one!:
Joe and I were in Champaign for Labor Day weekend and in true fashion stopped by some donation shops. We really love the Habitat For Humanity store there. It is where we got the chair we redid.
The first thing we saw when we walked in was this tripod and we immediately fell in love. When we saw the price tag was $9 we fell even more in love (remember we are cheap). It was originally a stand the held a telescope but the part was able to screw off. We bought it and it has sat around for a little while until we had time to play with it. Then we did the basket light in our dining room and had the extra lampshade and decided it was time to do the tripod lamp.
The tools we used were:
1. an old Ikea lamp that we didn’t use anymore for the bulb holder and the cord.
2. an 8″ harp from HD
3. Copper Pipe, 3/4 inch
4. a drill
First we unscrewed the piece that used to hole the telescope. Then there was a round hole that was left. We then placed the copper pipe down the hole to the length we liked. We used a pipe cutter to cut it to size.
We toped the pipe top with a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter so that the bulb holder would fit in.
We put the bulb holder into the pipe and praise God it was a perfect fit! If it doesn’t fit snug, you put a little super glue around it to keep it snug, we didn’t have to.
We had an old Ikea lamp we didn’t use anymore, so we took the bulb holder and cord out of that and used it for the lamp. We disconnected the wires from the bulb holder so that the cord could fit down the copper pipe. Then we re-connected to the place we removed it. Make sure to mark the places you removed it from so that it works when you re-connect.
Then we put on the harp and placed a bulb in and put the lamp shade on top and voila, a new lamp that took no time at all to do!
During the day:
Total for project:
1. Tripod – $9
2. Harp – $5
3. Copper pipe and top – $5.50
4. bulb holder and cord – already had it
5. lampshade – already had it
I like $19.50 a lot more than the average of $150 I have found them for!
Let me know if you have any questions!
oh and an update on my cleaning frenzy. Day 1 got rid of 167 items, here they are. Not a bad start, eh?
