HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT READING NOOK

With all of our chaotic experiences these past two years, we deserve a space to escape to - even if it's for 5 minutes before the kids find us! A reading nook is a space within your home that you can unwind and recharge. It's so important to dedicate a space that can be a daily reminder to slow down and take some time for yourself. I created a reading nook in my own house in my office. It's a place I can have uninterrupted me time (as long as I close the doors and the boys don't find me)! Here are some tips I've used to create the perfect reading nook:

Pick the right spot

The great thing about a reading nook is that you can really let your personality shine. It's allowed to be different from the rest of the house because it's for YOU and not anyone else. Think about your favorite spot to relax and unwind. Is it in a space with a ton of natural light and relaxing views, or is it more moody and cozy? Both types of spaces will make for amazing reading nooks! The trick is to bring in elements that help you unwind - and they're different for everybody. Sometimes it's really fun to create reading nooks in spaces that would otherwise go unused - like under a staircase. Once you've found the perfect spot, it's time to create your perfect space.

Use Comfy Materials

The key is being able to relax - whether you're devouring a good book or putting on a face mask. Using soft materials throughout your space is a great way to incorporate some texture while making the space cozy at the same time. I've never known a fuzzy blanket I didn't love! You can achieve this feel through blankets, fabrics, rugs - the list goes on. It's important to make this space functional yet elevated, and the best way to do that is to add textures that will make you want to curl up and read a good book.

Add A Gallery wall

Adding a gallery wall is the perfect way to personalize your space. I love incorporating photos, art, vintage frames, or whatever speaks to you. If you're reading nook is in the corner of the room, I love extending the gallery wall throughout two walls to really make the space feel cohesive and elevated. Play up the texture of your space with cool, vintage frames or keep it simple depending on the look you're going for!

Add A Pop Of Color

We all know I love a good pop of color. If you're looking to make your corner a fun space, I recommend going with a pop of color to liven it up. This can be done through a chair, rug, or even just fun pillows and blankets! I love mixing colors that complement each other, it makes the space look that much more intentional. Another recommendation: use velvet! It's been one of my favorite fabrics for reading chairs lately.

Add Lighting

No matter what type of space you're going for - light and airy or moody and cozy - choosing good lighting always takes your style to the next level. Even if you choose a space with lots of natural light, you'll still need lighting in order to use your space at night. A cool floor lamp is usually what I would recommend, but get creative! This can be a fun aspect to play up and make fun.

Bring In Some Life

I say this all the time, but adding plants and greenery will completely boost your mood. By bringing some of the outside in, it adds such a degree of life that no other decor can do! Incorporating plants will definitely add a zen feel to your space - just don't do what I do and forget to water them! You can go simple with one, or add a ton around your space.

Make It A Kids' Corner

Creating a kids' nook is such a great way to make your child's room fun and playful. Especially when they're younger, it's tough to know what to add to their space that doesn't feel chaotic and cluttered with a bunch of toys. Add a fun chair and bookshelves with toys and books and you're good to go! A reading nook in your child's room is amazing because it makes reading fun as well.

Make It Personal

I've mentioned this before, but make this space YOURS. Of course we love to make our spaces look intentional and cohesive with the rest of the space, but giving yourself a place to go that you feel you can truly relax and unwind is so much more important. This year has been a crazy one - you deserve it! Add in your favorite colors, textures, and pictures or works of art to really make this space feel like it was created specifically for you.
