There’s something really fun about getting older.
I feel like every season of life teaches you something new about yourself, and my 40s have definitely been no different. Between raising four boys, running a business, marriage, friendships, family and everything else life brings, I’m learning what makes life feel fuller, easier and a whole lot more fun.
And a lot of it is actually really simple.
So for this week’s Tuesday Tip, I thought I’d share a few things I’m happily making normal in my 40s. 🤎
Changing My Mind
Turns out, you’re allowed to change your mind!
You can say yes and later realize something else makes more sense. You can love something for years and suddenly want something completely different. You can change your priorities as your life changes.
I actually think there’s something exciting about that.
We’re constantly learning, growing and entering new seasons. Of course what we want is going to change along the way.
Changing your mind can simply mean you know yourself a little better now.
Having People Over When the House Isn’t Perfect
This one I’m REALLY embracing.
I love having people in our home, and with four boys, waiting until everything is perfectly clean and put together would mean waiting forever. 😂
So come over!
There might be toys out. There might be laundry upstairs. We might be ordering pizza instead of making the dinner I originally imagined.
But there will also be music, laughing, kids running around, people sitting around the table and probably someone staying way later than they planned.
That’s the good stuff.
A home doesn’t have to be perfect to be full of really great memories.
Wearing the Outfit Again
If I love it, you’re going to see it again.
And honestly? I LOVE that.
There’s something so good about knowing what you feel great in and actually enjoying it instead of constantly feeling like you need something new.
So yes, I wore it last week.
And yes, I will probably wear it again next week too.
Prioritizing Date Nights
With four boys, going out isn’t quite as spontaneous as it used to be. There are schedules to figure out, babysitters to arrange, and sometimes staying home just feels a whole lot easier.
But I’m finding that makes date nights even more important.
Making time to sit across from my husband, have an uninterrupted conversation, laugh together, and just be us for a little while has become something I really value.
It doesn’t have to be fancy. Sometimes it’s dinner out, sometimes it’s squeezing in time wherever we can find it. It’s really about being intentional about that one-on-one connection.
Our life is full, and I LOVE this season with our boys. But I’m learning that prioritizing time together in the middle of all of it is one of the healthiest and most rewarding things we can do for our marriage.
So yes, date nights are something I’m happily making more room for in my 40s.
Keeping My “No” Simple
I’ve learned that making room for the things I really want to say yes to sometimes means keeping my “no” simple.
Not because I don’t care.
Because time is valuable. Family is valuable. Friendships are valuable. And the things we choose to fill our days with matter.
I want my yes to mean something.
And I think there’s something really freeing about knowing what deserves one.
Ordering Takeout When I Planned to Cook
The groceries will still be there tomorrow.
Some nights we cook. Some nights we order pizza. Some nights dinner looks exactly like I planned, and some nights everyone is eating something completely different.
And somehow, everyone survives.
I’m learning to enjoy the plan when the plan works and enjoy the change of plans when it doesn’t.
Sometimes takeout around the table with your favorite people ends up being the better night anyway.
Using the Good Stuff on a Regular Day
This might be my favorite one.
Use the good dishes.
Light the candle.
Wear the dress.
Open the bottle.
Invite your friends over.
Take the trip.
Make the reservation.
I don’t want to save all the things I love for some future “special occasion.”
A random Tuesday can be the special occasion.
Because so much of life happens in these completely ordinary days and I want to actually enjoy them while I’m living them.
I Think I’m Going to Like This Decade
I definitely don’t have everything figured out in my 40s.
But I’m really enjoying this season.
More people around the table. More time with the people I love. More wearing what makes me feel good. More changing my mind. More spontaneous plans. More nights at home. More using the good stuff now.
And maybe that’s my Tuesday Tip this week:
Don’t wait for life to feel special before you enjoy it. There’s already so much good happening right now. 🤎
Xoxo,
Meg
