Meg’s Tuesday Tips: Don’t Get Junk Drunk

Meg’s Tuesday Tips: Don’t Get Junk Drunk

By: @fleurmariedesign

I love a good find.

New, vintage, custom - I love the thrill of seeing a piece and knowing it has potential.

But here is where people get into trouble: they start buying before they have a plan.

And that is what I call getting junk drunk. 😂

It is not about shopping too much. It is not about only buying expensive things. It is definitely not about having a perfect house.

It is about getting so excited by a piece, a deal, a color, or a trend that you skip the part that actually matters most:

Will this work in the room I am trying to create?

Designers do this differently.

Before a designer starts filling a room, they usually finish the room on paper first. Not perfectly. Not down to every last candle and throw pillow. But enough to know the direction.

They know the measurements, the traffic flow, the missing pieces, and what needs to be the “main character” versus what needs to quietly support the room.

That is why a designer can look at a dresser, sofa, buffet, or dining table and know pretty quickly if it is worth saying yes to.

It is not because they magically have better taste.

It is because they have a filter.

And honestly, that is the part most people are missing.

When you do not have a plan, everything cute feels like a yes. Then suddenly your home is full, but the room still does not feel finished.

That is the difference between collecting pieces and creating a room.

A collected home is beautiful when the pieces are working together. But a home full of random purchases can start to feel chaotic, even if every single thing was cute on its own.

So before I buy anything, I ask:

Does this help finish the room I am actually trying to create?

That one question makes you slow down in the best way.

It makes you think about scale. Is this the right size?

It makes you think about function. Do I need storage, seating, lighting, or something that makes the room feel more complete?

It makes you think about timing. Is this the piece I should buy now, or am I avoiding the bigger piece I actually need?

And it makes you think about quality. Am I buying something I will still love in five years, or am I buying something because I am tired of looking?

This is why floor plans, measurements, and mood boards matter so much. They are not just designer extras. They are decision-making tools.

When you have a plan, shopping becomes easier.

You can walk away from the wrong thing without feeling like you missed out. You can recognize the right thing faster. And you can spend money on the pieces that matter most instead of slowly spending the same amount on things you end up replacing.

That is the goal.

Not less personality.
Not less fun.
Not less shopping.

Just smarter shopping.

Because the best homes are not built from impulse. They are built from intention, patience, and a few really good pieces that were worth waiting for.

So the next time you find something you love, ask yourself:

Does this help finish the room I am actually trying to create?

If the answer is yes, amazing. Bring it home.

If the answer is no, let it go.

That is how you keep from getting junk drunk.

And trust me, we have all been there.

And if this is the part where you feel stuck, this is exactly what our design services are here for. We help you make the plan, choose the right pieces, think through scale, color, function, and flow - so your home feels collected, personal, and intentional without the overwhelm.
