The vintage furniture guide I wish more people knew - Meg’s Tuesday Tips

The vintage furniture guide I wish more people knew - Meg’s Tuesday Tips

After years of refinishing vintage furniture, sourcing pieces, restoring them, helping customers design their homes, and living with these pieces ourselves… I’ve learned how special it is when a vintage piece is not only beautiful, but truly right for your home.

Of course, vintage furniture has history. We all know that part already. But over time, I’ve realized the real skill is learning how to recognize the pieces that will not only look beautiful in your home, but actually serve your life well too.

Because the best vintage pieces are not just pretty.

They work hard.
They age beautifully.
They last.
They move with you through different homes and different stages of life.

And honestly, some of the most important things to look for are not always obvious at first glance.

So if you’ve been hunting for that perfect piece, trying to understand what makes vintage furniture truly good, or you’re simply a fellow vintage lover… this is for you.

One of the first things I always look at is the bones.

The structure matters more than the finish every single time.

Good weight, solid wood construction, dovetail drawers, sturdy legs, quality craftsmanship… those are the things that tell you whether a piece was actually made to last.

Paint color can change.
Hardware can change.
Styling changes constantly.

But good bones are everything.

And practicality matters just as much as beauty.

For example, tallboys are one of my favorite vintage pieces for people who need more storage without taking up too much floor space. They’re functional, beautiful, timeless, and add so much warmth and height to a room.

But when I’m selecting one, I always check:
— Does it feel sturdy?
— Is the wood solid?
— Does the storage actually work for real life?

Because a piece should not only look good in your home. It should make your everyday life easier too.

And if you love gathering people around your table, I will almost always recommend adding a buffet to a dining room.

Not only do they anchor the space beautifully, but they become one of the most functional pieces in the house over time. Extra serving space, hidden storage, dishes, linens, hosting essentials… people usually end up using them way more than they expected.

And again, I always come back to the bones:
the craftsmanship, the structure, the proportions, the quality, and whether it feels timeless enough to evolve with you.

Because the best vintage pieces are usually the ones you keep for years.

Not because they’re trendy.

Because they slowly become part of your life, your routines, your memories, and your home story.

And honestly… those are always the pieces worth waiting for.

And if you’ve been hunting for the right vintage piece, this is such a good time to look.
