Trendy vs. Timeless: Do You Really Have To Choose? - Meg's Tuesday Tips

Trendy vs. Timeless: Do You Really Have To Choose? - Meg's Tuesday Tips

A few days ago, I found myself saving yet another room to my Pinterest board.

It had a skirted table. A floral lampshade. A vintage rug. A paint color that probably wasn’t considered “timeless” by most design rules.

And it made me pause, because if you’ve spent any amount of time in the design world, you’ve probably heard the advice:

“Don’t follow trends.”

“Make timeless choices.”

“You’ll regret trendy things.”

But standing there, staring at another room I absolutely loved, I realized something.

Maybe it’s not really about picking a side.

Maybe it’s about figuring out what you actually love enough to live with.

Because honestly? Some of my favorite things in my own home might be considered trends.

And some of today’s biggest trends are simply old ideas finding their way back into our homes again.

The skirted furniture we’re seeing everywhere right now? Not new.

The fabric lampshades? Not new.

The cozy reading nooks, layered patterns, collected rooms, and antique furniture everyone is suddenly obsessed with? Definitely not new.

They’re simply having another moment.

Which is why I think we sometimes give trends a bad reputation.

Not every trend is a bad decision.

Not every timeless choice is automatically beautiful.

And not every home should look the same just because someone labeled a particular style “classic.”

The homes I find myself most drawn to are usually a mix of both.

A timeless foundation.

A little personality.

A few risks.

A few things that make people smile.

A few things that feel current.

And a few things that feel like they’ve always been there.

And maybe that’s the fun part. Your home does not have to stay the same forever. It gets to change as your life changes.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is becoming so afraid of making the “wrong” design choice that they stop making choices altogether.

They wait.

They overthink.

They convince themselves they need to pick something that will still be perfect twenty years from now.

Meanwhile, they’re living in a room they don’t love today.

Life is happening now.

Your home should make you happy now.

That doesn’t mean filling your house with every trend you see online.

It also doesn’t mean refusing to try anything new.

It means learning which things are worth investing in and which things can simply be fun.

Maybe your sofa is timeless.

Maybe your lampshade isn’t.

Maybe your dining table stays forever.

Maybe your throw pillows change every season.

Maybe you paint a room a color you absolutely love even if it isn’t considered “safe.”

And maybe that’s okay.

Actually, I think that’s more than okay.

I think that’s where the best homes come from.

The homes we remember aren’t usually the ones that followed all the rules.

They’re the ones that felt personal.

Collected.

Lived in.

A little unexpected.

And completely loved.

So if you’ve been wondering whether you should choose trendy or timeless, my answer is simple:

You don’t have to choose.

Build the timeless foundation.

Have fun with the rest.

And make your home feel like something you actually love coming back to. 🤍

Xoxo,

Meg
