What to Know Before Choosing Wallpaper for Your Space

What to Know Before Choosing Wallpaper for Your Space

If you know me, you know I love wallpaper.

Like… really love wallpaper.

Do I think it could go in almost every room? Honestly… yes. Haha. And I’m only a little kidding.

To me, there’s just no better way to bring personality into a space. Wallpaper adds character, uniqueness, texture, and so much visual interest. It can completely change how a room feels and make it feel so much more thoughtful and finished.

And beyond all of that, wallpaper is just fun.

You have papers that are bold and colorful, some that are subtle and textured, some that feel graphic and geometric, and others that look almost like artwork on the wall. You have scenic and landscape wallpapers that tell a whole story. You have classic patterns, playful prints, organic textures, and everything in between.

So when people start looking for wallpaper, I think the best place to start is not with what’s trendy, but with the space itself.

Start With the Room

Where are you putting it?

That changes everything.

Is it a bathroom? A stairway? A dining room? An entry? A bedroom? A mudroom? Every space has its own energy, and wallpaper can help bring that to life in a different way.

A bathroom is such a fun place to use wallpaper because it’s a space where you can really go for it. It can feel playful, bold, dramatic, or soft and charming.

A stairway is another favorite because wallpaper adds movement and makes that transition through the house feel intentional and interesting.

A dining room is a great place to create mood. You can bring in texture, color, or pattern in a way that makes the whole room feel more layered and memorable.

That’s usually how we approach it too. We look at the room first, think about how it’s being used, and decide what kind of statement we want the wallpaper to make.

Let’s Talk Materials, Because This Matters

Not all wallpaper is created equal, and this is something I always try to explain because the material matters just as much as the pattern.

Grasscloth is one of my personal favorites. It adds so much warmth, texture, and dimension to a space, and it instantly makes a room feel layered and special. It has this natural, rich look that brings so much character. If you want a space to feel elevated, cozy, and full of personality, grasscloth is such a beautiful option.

Vinyl wallpaper is another great choice, especially when you want something durable and easy to maintain. It’s a little more forgiving, which makes it a really practical option for busy spaces while still giving you plenty of beautiful design options.

When we’re choosing wallpaper, we’re not just looking at the print. We’re thinking about how the room functions, the mood we want to create, and what material makes the most sense for that space. That part is just as important as choosing something pretty.

Then Comes the Fun Part: Pattern

This is where people can either get really excited… or totally overwhelmed.

Because there are so many directions you can go.

You have geometric wallpapers, which feel more structured and graphic. These can be really fun in spaces where you want something with rhythm, shape, or a little bit of a modern edge.

You have wallpapers that are all about color, where maybe the pattern is softer but the palette is what really makes the statement.

And then you have landscape or scenic wallpapers, which I love because they almost feel like a mural. These are beautiful when you want the wallpaper to really create a moment in the room. I have this kind in my bedroom and office, and I love it. It feels peaceful, but at the same time it makes the space feel cozy and warm.

Some wallpapers are meant to be the star. Others are there to add texture and depth more quietly. Neither is better, it just depends on the feeling you want in the space.

A Few Mistakes I’d Avoid

Lighting changes everything.

Also, think about the rest of the room. Wallpaper does not live alone. It has to work with your furniture, your finishes, your paint colors, your lighting, and the overall feel of the home.

And honestly, one mistake people make is playing it too safe.

Sometimes the thing that feels a little bold at first ends up being the thing that gives the room life.

How We Do It

When we’re selecting wallpaper for a client, we’re always looking at the full picture.

We think about the room, the scale, the colors, the textures, the furniture, and how everything is going to work together. Sometimes the wallpaper becomes the main statement in the room. Other times it’s the layer that quietly pulls everything together.

But either way, the goal is the same.

We want it to feel personal.

Because your home should feel like you. It should reflect your style, your personality, your family, and the way you actually live. And wallpaper is one of the best ways to do that. It brings so much uniqueness and character into a home, and honestly, I will probably always be a little obsessed with it.
